The river seen here flooding the meadows around Giverny is the Epte, a tributary of the Seine. Monet painted it in the autumn of 1896 as heavy rains transformed the countryside into a startling mirror-like surface. The Epte runs through Giverny, where the artist had settled in 1883. 10 years later Monet diverted the tributary in order to create his water garden.
