Forsyth decorated this palette with two small landscape sketches “tacked” to it with pins painted in the trompe l’oeil (fool the eye) manner. This whimsical object was presented by him to his early benefactor, Indianapolis dry goods store owner Thomas E. Hibben, who helped finance Forsyth’s studies in Germany.
