'Nature: Quote and Misquote', (1970) oil on canvas, 30 x 30 inches1970
This painting was prompted by musings on the concept of Nature following a return to Nature after a period of abstraction but, more specifically, by a remark made by Cezanne in a letter to Bernard (1904) 'deal with nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere and the cone'. Cezanne did not mention cubes but has often been misquoted I guess because the Cubist movement came after him and was heavily indebted to him. It was for this reason I employed a cubistic painting manner.
