In Arles they encountered the ghost of van Gogh, (2012) Oil on Linen, 66 x 96.5 cm2012
A memory of a visit to Arles in search of van Gogh’s motifs made in the early 1960s. On the right is the figure of ex art and design student Margaret Clark and next to her is the standing figure of Richard Stubbs who was also an ex art student. The setting is a bank of the River Rhone with the Trinquitaille Bridge in the background. This bridge was destroyed and then rebuilt after the Second World War and so is different in structure from the one Vincent painted in 1888. Two moments in time are thus depicted.
