'Crime Scene - do not enter', (2006) oil on linen, 140 x 100 cm.
2006
This Esher landscape depicts a pleasant, tree-lined path - The Old Church Path - that links a residential avenue to the town’s High Street. A police tape is stretched across the path forbidding entry because the path has been used by armed robbers who have attacked a jeweller’s shop on the High Street a number of times. (The robbers park their getaway cars in the residential avenue and use the path as an escape route.) Thus the seemingly idyllic route has its negative connotations. The shop in question later closed down.
Clearly, the police tape across the canvas calls attention to the flatness of the support (in contrast to the pictorial depth behind) and its instruction 'do not enter' could be intrepreted as an order to the viewer not to look into the depths of the picture space.
