The Distribution of the Eagle Standards  1808

by Jacques-Louis David

This painting depicts the Napoleon's ceremony 3 days after he assumed power as Emperor. During this ceremony, he sought to find again the military ethos of the Roman empire. He went on to do this by distributing 'eagles' that were meant to give birth to feelings of loyalty and pride in Napoleon's new rule.
