The Death of Socrates
1787
Oil on canvas
This painting by Jacques Louis David shows the story of death of one of the greatest philosophers to live. In history, it was found that Socrates was accused by the Athenian government of corrupting minds with his teachings. He was faced with the decision to either give up his teachings or to drink hemlock. The painting shows the great confidence that Socrates had of his belief in his philosophies even as he chooses to die by a bowl of hemlock.
