‘Monument at Ground Zero’, (2007), oil on linen, 140 x 100 cm.2007
A second painting that commemorates and mourns the Islamist fundamentalist attacks on the World Trade Center towers, New York in which around 3000 people were killed in 2001. In this case, the setting for the allegorical, female grief statue is the ruined remains of the two towers, a place known as Ground Zero. The iconography of ruins, dark palette and pictorial style may remind viewers of the Sublime associated with Romanticism and also British war paintings from the First and Second World Wars.
