By the Dee at Rhug
This is a quiet corner of a field, down by the River Dee, on the Rhug estate in North Wales. The river (which is unseen in this painting) is a few feet off to the right. The path runs along by the side of the river, and a row of standing stones separate the path from the field on the left.
The tree at the front is the ideal kind of tree to paint. It has sufficient individuality to treat the picture as a 'portrait' of a tree. (And it's also useful that a painter can work on this site for hours on end without seeing a soul).
