

A Miracle of Saint Joseph of Cupertino (1603–1663)

This lively sketch is a loose study is for an altarpiece that was commissioned by the Colonna family and is today in the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Barberini. With great theatrical effect, Costanzi depicts Saint Joseph of Cupertino, who was celebrated for his levitations, curing a possessed youth whom he holds dramatically by the hair in midair.
