Renoir frequently included flowers in his compositions, and he seems to have been especially fond of roses. Umehara Ryuzaburo, the donor of this painting to the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo who was heavily influenced by the work of Renoir, also shared this love of flowers. Here, the color harmony with its purplish reds and blue drawn in particularly rough brushstrokes suggests that the work may have been created in the last few years of Renoir's life.
