Lady at the Paris Exposition
1889
This vertical work is approximately four feet high by two feet wide. The painting shows a woman leaning against a stone balustrade. She is fashionably dressed with a black jacket over a white shirt and a small red hat on her head. She wears an ankle length blue skirt that is decorated with a band of lace extending down the left side from waist to hem. She wears dark stockings and shiny black shoes with bows. In her right hand she holds a tan leather glove, and in her left hand which is gloved, she holds a closed red parasol. The tip of the parasol stands against the seat of a wrought iron café chair to her front left. In the seat of the same chair is a book bound in blue. To her right are two chairs and a table. In the seat of one of the chairs is a black umbrella and on the table rests the newspaper Le Figaro, and two beer mugs, one empty the other full. In the background one can see several pavilions of the Paris Exposition on the Champs de Mars, and a section of the Eiffel Tower in its original red brown color.
