The Crucifixion
1480
Medium:
Engraving
This is Martin Schongauer's take on one of the most familiar images of Christian art: the Crucifixion of Christ. In accordance with the relevant biblical accounts (and other Crucifixion scenes), we see four holy women (including the Virgin and Mary Magdalen) to the left of the cross. To the right of Jesus, Schongauer depicts various other figures. Stephaton, the Roman soldier, is particularly noticeable; he bears on a staff the vinegar-soaked sponge which he famously held to Christ's lips in a final act of mercy.
