The Annunciation
1436
Medium:
Oil on canvas transferred from panel
Dimensions:
Canvas: 90.2 x 34.1 cm (35 1/2 x 13 7/16 in.)
Support: 92.7 x 36.7 cm (36 1/2 x 14 7/16 in.)
Framed: 102.2 x 55.9 x 8.9 cm (40 1/4 x 22 x 3 1/2 in.)
This is Van Eyck's depiction of one of the most famous biblical scenes: the moment at which the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin that she will bear the son of God. Here Mary is dressed, as is typical, in virginal blue; the lilies before her are similarly a symbol of her purity. Visible also is a symbol of Mary's impregnation; the dove and the light of God (an allegory for Jesus) are seen heading towards Mary from the window.
