Susanna and the Elders 1650
by Rembrandt
Two old men approached the biblical heroine Susanna with a dishonourable proposition while she was bathing. They threatened to accuse her of adultery if she refused to do what they wanted. In this drawing, she turns away from them in embarrassment. The elder’s hand on her shoulder and the admonishing finger he raises speak volumes.
