Portrait of Ernest de Beveren, Lord of West-IJsselmonde and De Lindt 1685
by Aert de Gelder
The 25-year-old Ernest de Beveren was the last scion of one of Dordrecht’s most distinguished regent families. He is represented in a fanciful historicizing costume. Emulating Rembrandt, De Gelder painted
with broad brushstrokes, used his brush handle to scratch into the paint layer, and introduced similar contrasts of light and dark.
