A Hunter’s Bag near a Tree Stump with a Magpie, Known as ‘The Contemplative Magpie’ 1678
by Melchior d'Hondecoeter
Together with A Hunter’s Bag on a Terrace, Hondecoeter painted this work for Soestdijk Palace. Here the light comes from the right, in the other work from the left. This difference in the fall of light reveals that he took account of the paintings’ original placement to either side of a window.
