Floris Claesz. van Dijck (c. 1575-1651)
Floris van Dijck was born in Delft, around 1575. He lived in Haarlem for a few years, where he was betrothed in 1604. While the identity of his master remains a mystery, it is known that he travelled to Italy following his apprenticeship. Most of Van Dijck’s paintings are still lifes, and he was famous for his realistic depictions of flowers and plants. Although he was a leading member of Haarlem’s artists' guild, he hardly painted at all in the last twenty-five years of his life. Perhaps this was because he no longer needed to paint to earn a living: his will, drawn up in 1605, reveals him to have been a wealthy man. Floris van Dijck died in 1651.
