The Beach at Saint-Mammès
1884
Oil on canvas, 20 3/8 x 24 1/2 in. (51.8 x 62.2 cm)
Signed: l.r., in dark blue-violet paint: Sisley S. / 84
Saint Louis Art Museum
Notes:
Alfred Sisley painted a view of barges and rowboats tied up along the sandy riverbank on the Seine some forty miles to the southeast of Paris. Sisley, whose name reflects his English parentage, often represented the industrial traffic along France’s extensive network of rivers and canals. This work has a strong diagonal structure leading to the center right and is notable for the artist’s lively brushwork and luminous blues, particularly on the sparkling water surface.
