Louis XIV Crossing into the Netherlands at Lobith 1672
by Adam Frans van der Meulen
Leading a 120,000-strong army, the French king Louis XIV invaded the Netherlands on 12 June 1672. Glorifying Louis XIV, the Flemish painter Van der Meulen recorded the military manoeuvre. However, the artist took some liberties: at the time, the King – portrayed here on a grey horse – was actually staying at a nearby monastery.
