City Walls in Winter 1650
by Willem Schellinks
A canal running alongside a fortified city disappears into the distance, the city walls in ruins and the bridge
collapsed. In the background at right is a glowing furnace, where marble is burned to make chalk. These
motifs, often found in paintings by Dutch Italianates, have here been shifted to a cold wintery day.
