A Sleeping Girl
1875
Moore took great pains in the creation of his pictures. He would make studies of each figure (both nude and draped), as well as separate drapery studies, and a cartoon of the overall design. The finished pictures were produced in a number of distinct stages. First, the overall design was laid out in a single colour. Then then a thin layer of colours was added. Next, hotter colours were thickly applied. A thin, transparent layer of grey was then worked over the whole picture. Moore finished by applying thin and delicate colours. The result is a superb luminosity and delicacy. [source]
