The subject and composition of this painting was inspired by Vincent van Gogh's 1888 depiction of a simple wooden chair used by the peasants of Provence. It was a chair van Gogh used and hence it acts as a symbolic self-portrait. He in turn was inspired by an engraving of Charles Dickens' empty chair following the death of the writer published in the illustrated press. In ...
