To Fly
2000
'To Fly' is the first painting David did when he became a full-time artist in 2000.
The curtains, the shadows, and the figure are all authentic in this painting. David and his wife Mary bought 20 metres of net curtain, and Mary cut it and hemmed it into curtains. David hung them in the open door of their double garage. Mary posed with them, with the sun streaming and a breeze blowing through them. The sea and clouds were made up in David's mind.
To Fly was sold to an international collector, but they chose to keep it in New Zealand, in a special place they regularly return to when travelling back to Aotearoa.
