I am in love with the sea and spend much of my free time in it. I don’t think I could ever live far away from the coast again. This painting illuminates the meeting point between the living sea that moves like breath, inhaling and exhaling itself into the world, with the illusory permanence of our homes and lives. But water reminds us that it is the nature of all existence to ever change, to ever evolve. The title also has a double meaning: first, the obvious one. Secondly, in reference to one of my favorite artists, the Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse, whose painting “A Mermaid” is partially reproduced in this scene.
