The Seine and the Railroad Bridge at Argenteuil (La Seine et le pont du chemin de fer d'Argenteuil)
1885 - 1887
In 1851 the Paris/Saint-Germain-en-Laye railway line came to Argenteuil, bringing with it thousands of middle-class tourists from the French capital to the small, self-sufficient town in under twenty-five minutes. Developers and industrialists followed, transforming Argenteuil into the region’s most popular boating and sailing destination.
In the 1880s the Impressionist painter Gustave Caillebotte identified Argenteuil as an ideal modern subject where nature and heavy industry—celebrated here in the town’s new concrete and iron railroad bridge—mingled harmoniously. [source]
