In this painting the damage human beings do to the environment is mourned. The setting depicted is the Kuwait desert after the departure of Iraq’s army in 1991. In a needless, reckless and vindictive act of vandalism, Saddam Hussein’s armed forces had set over 600 oil wells on fire creating an appalling level of pollution that took firefighters months of work to rectify.
