This exquisite Madonna and Child was painted for the wealthy Florentine banker Filippo Strozzi. The arcade is decorated with his armorial emblems (three crescents). The landscape is probably intended to suggest the countryside around the Strozzi villa near Florence, where the picture may have hung in a bedroom or private oratory.
