Badge with Adoration of the Shepherds (Escudo con la adoración de los pastores)  1770

by José de Páez

This shield depicts the Adoration of Christ by the shepherds. While shields were generally worn by nuns, this type of badge was worn by male members of the Bethlemite order. The order—devoted to educating poor children and helping the sick—was founded in 1653 in Guatemala and quickly spread throughout Spanish America.
