AFRICAN MADONNA - A farm worker in the Villiersdorp district, Sarie has an aura of angelic beauty and serenity.
She is also a habitual drunk, liar, thief (she stole my wife’s handbag) and has been stabbed twice and beaten with a pickaxe by her husband for sleeping around. Scratch the happy veneer and you find a soulful melange of acceptance and anguish- unfortunately like much of Africa.
