Rogier Willems

As an artist I create mainly realistic portraits in traditional oils on canvas. I try to connect the intimacy of the individual with the universality of human existence, this way elevating the portrait into an autonomous work of art which ascends the context of the person portrayed. My style is characterized by a preference of drama, I am interested in the introspective aspects of life. I am inspired by artists such as Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud, Diego Vélazquez and Balthus. I have a great admiration for the old Dutch and Italian painters. Besides being a portraitist, I am a stage designer for theater as well as graphic designer. I also paint portraits on commission.
