Johannes, Jan or Johann Vermeer (1632 –1675) is one of the best known artists from the Dutch Golden Age. Vermeer was the painter of interiors, with intimate and serene settings where persons are painted on their daily activities. However, a ‘tronie’ (Girl with the Pearl Earring) and two landscapes (View of Delft and Little Street) are among his most famous paintings. Vermeer is known as “the master of light” because of the unique way he captured light in his paintings. The oeuvre he left behind is one of the smallest in the history of art containing less than 40 paintings which currently belong to the collection of major art museums around the world.
